Our latest kitchen remodel is complete! Going forward in 2017, white kitchen cabinets still remain popular, as well as hardwood floors. Here is the story behind the major material choices, planning, layout and design of our newest kitchen and family room remodel in Aurora, IL.

So, let us start with what we removed from the old kitchen:

  • Removed and disposed old cabinets and counter top
  • Removed old kitchen flooring
  • Demolished knee wall between the kitchen and family room

Here is what our newly designed kitchen consisted of:

  • We completed all necessary drywall repairs
  • We added electric outlets and breakers into existing panel per code requirements
  • We installed solid oak 3 1/4" wood floor, stained and applied clear coats
  • We installed new white colonial 3 1/4" baseboards with white shoe
  • We primed and painted the ceiling, walls and baseboards
  • We installed a tile back splash above counter-top
  • We installed a granite counter-top, standard color and edge on cabinets and island
  • We moved the gas stove to a new location
  • We installed white Diamond standard exterior and natural wood interior construction, full extension drawer with soft close doors kitchen cabinets
  • We installed the kitchen sink, faucet, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave in cabinet, as well as the two island light pendants

Looking at the new kitchen, the light gray walls beautifully complement the solid craftsmanship white cabinets. The crisp white cabinets with light-painted kitchen walls equal maximum brightness!

We added two recessed pendant lights which run parallel with the island plus other small spotlight recessed lights in the ceiling. They are subtle, but helpful for illuminating those places at the counter. Now, with the new lighting and fixtures, the kitchen is better illuminated and feels more appropriate for the room.

Furthermore, we wanted to add more texture and contrast with lots of warm wood and other natural materials. The wood floor throughout the kitchen and family room is a big help in helping keep everything feeling warmer and less sterile. Additional elements such as woven blinds, partial wood stools, wood table, wood shelves and mobile shelving unit are an intentional choice.

The reason for these light, natural, and wood-toned selections is that they are flexible and can be used and complement different accessories, such as vases, frames, boards, planters, flowers and other transitional or trendy decorations.

This Aurora homeowner has endless interior decorating choices!
