Over time, vinyl siding can accumulate a host of dirt, grime, stains, spider webs, rust and discoloration, even mold and mildew. Additionally, the vinyl may have been exposed to commonly used household products such as caulk, sealant, paint, motor oil, etc.

Vinyl siding is a very durable and resilient exterior building material, but on occasion it does require some small repairs, cleaning and overall maintenance.  It is fairly easy to clean and there are numerous products to help remove stains.

Here is what you will need to get started:

  • Start by working from the bottom to the top
  • Use a soft cloth or soft bristle brush (do not use abrasive scrubbers or steel wool)
  • Thoroughly rinse the area to minimize streaking
  • Regular cleaning: Combine 3-to-1 water to vinegar mixture with a cup of all-purpose cleaner
  • Stronger cleaning:  Mix together 1 gallon of water, 1 quart of liquid laundry bleach, 1 cup of powder general household cleaner and  1/2 cup powder laundry detergent
  • Wear protective clothing

Do not use cleaning products which contain undiluted chlorine bleach, organic solvents, liquid grease removers, nail polish removers or furniture cleaners, as they might damage the siding’s surface.

Some vinyl siding manufacturers advise against using pressure washing. However, some may recommend a limited amount of water pressure washing. If delicate pressure washing is permitted, make sure you keep the stream at eye level and pointed straight at the siding, never at an angle. Use extra care when washing around windows, doors and other openings.
