Looking to remodel your home? It makes sense to carefully plan ahead and this is why we’ve put together a list of some home improvement projects for inspiration. In this article we’re going to concentrate on projects that you should consider doing pre-fall, or in the months of August through September. However, you can schedule some of these based on your budget, timeline, weather and your work and life.

Transitioning from August to September, makes for a great time for the following house improvements:

  • Windows and doors replacements - temperatures vary between 40F to 80F degrees and are mild enough for caulking to adhere. Investing in new windows and doors help detain your indoor heat and block cold temperatures.
  • Roof replacement – installing a new and improved roofing system before the fall chill and winter snow set in. Roofing projects are mostly done in the spring-through-fall, because the roofing material needs certain higher temperatures to seal. Investing in a new roof with improved ventilation in the attic provides a “cap” to maintain a steady house temperature, savings in your energy bills and not to mention your comfort.
  • Siding replacement – a new and improved siding installation is ideal during these two months due to the stability of outside temperatures. Investing in new house siding provides your home with added “padding“ to help maintain a house temperature and additional savings in your energy bills.
  • Interior remodeling – tackling indoor work like a kitchen, bathroom or basement remodel is recommended during these months, because it’s ideal for family vacations or to spend most time outside. You can avoid all unpleasant inconveniences of living with a renovation (dust, noise, debris – just to name a couple).
  • House addition – ideal months for a house renovation on a grander scale because it’s simple to spend time outside to escape the chaos inside. No kitchen? No problem. Grilling in your backyard solves that issue.

Homeowners know that maintaining a home is a year-round job. But getting your home ready for winter should start now rather than later. Here are other items for your to-do-list:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts
  • Add insulation to attic and walls
  • Check chimney and venting systems
  • Cover any exposed exterior pipes
  • Inspect your furnace, replace filters, clean registers and grilles
  • Inspect your water heater
  • Use caulk, spray foam, weather stripping around windows and doors
  • Check interior/exterior holes where pipes, vents and electrical conduits run through
